The Ars Nova of the fourteenth century took the art of polyphony to new and experimental levels, with stunning two, three and four part music by such great composers as Guillaume de Machaut, Francesco Landini, Jacopo da Bologna, among many others. We'll delve into this gorgeous music from various perspectives, and study the differences between the national styles.

Explore rounds, canons, catches, and other forms using musical imitation from the 12th to 17th centuries. The music will range from the simple and sweet to the complex and rich. For anyone who likes to sing, experienced and otherwise.

Explore the wit, humour and melancholy of the High Renaissance in England. This class will work on dance melodies, ballads, madrigals, rounds, drinking, love, and newsworthy songs from a number of different sources: 'Pills to Purge Melancholy', Ravenscroft, Playford, Shakespeare’s plays, among others.

for those with some experience negotiating the world of early medieval music
This class will focus on the challenges of performing monophonic song styles of the Ars Antiqua- music of the Troubadours, Trouveres, Minnesanger, Cantigas, Laude, and English song. We'll explore the art of interpretation, accompaniment, improvisation, different genres and styles, presentation.
For singers and instrumentalists comfortable on their voices/instruments
with some experience in medieval music.
4 Thursdays: April 21, April 28, May 5, May 19 from 7-9 pm.

We'll learn and explore tunes and styles from Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Brittany, Galicia, Cape Breton, and the Isle of Man. Much of this day of music will be off the page - great for ear-training, increasing your repertoire, stylistic differences, and the pleasure and challenge of taking part in the oldest method of music transmission (sheet music will be handed out at the end of the day - when you don't need it anymore!). for instruments
